Physics Teacher, Friend, Brother, & Loving Son
David Mertins, beloved son, brother, and educator, passed away at the age of 39. Born in Montgomery, Alabama, David was a passionate teacher, scientist, and mentor who touched countless lives throughout his life and career.
David’s interest in science started at an early age with fascination and curiosity of weather phenomena, particularly storms and hurricanes. His interest grew when he experienced Hurricane Opal firsthand.
David graduated from Etowah High School in Georgia. He went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in physics from the University of West Georgia where his love for astronomy and physics first began, followed by a master’s degree in nuclear physics from the University of Tennessee. A standout achievement was his collaboration on the Long Baseline Neutrino Experiment (LBNE) at the University of Alabama, contributing to groundbreaking research in small particle physics.
Returning to the University of West Georgia, David became an Instructor and Laboratory & Observatory Coordinator in the Physics Department, where he taught Astronomy and Physics. His students frequently praised him for his ability to simplify complex concepts and his approachable, down-to-earth teaching style. One student shared, “He genuinely cared about his students and wanted them to succeed.” Another remarked, “You could tell he really loved physics and made it understandable for everyone.” Beyond the classroom, David worked with the University’s observatory and led stargazing events that sparked wonder in both students and the broader Carrollton community. His love for the universe went beyond academics—he was always eager to share the beauty of the cosmos with others.
David brought a unique sense of humor to the classroom utilizing it to bring liveliness and make learning enjoyable for his students. One notable example was a character, Sir Cumference, he occasionally used it to keep students’ interest.
He was not only an educator but a beloved son, brother, and friend. Those who knew him will remember his kind spirit, intellectual curiosity, and unwavering willingness to help others whenever needed.
After all the years David spent looking up at the stars, he will now be among them through the Remembrance spacecraft’s journey. His spirit will always be part of the vast universe that he so adored. When his family, students, and friends look into the night sky, they will know that he is resting among the stars.
A Journey Beyond Earth
A portion of David’s ashes will be launched to space aboard our upcoming mission, where they will orbit Earth as part of a lasting celestial tribute.
Whether stargazing from home or tracking the spacecraft through the app, David’s loved ones will be able to follow the journey—knowing that their story is quite literally written in the stars.
