If you are uncomfortable or otherwise unable to complete this process yourself, your local funeral home will do it for you, most likely for no charge.

Important: USPS Cremated Remains Shipping Box

Before you begin, please order a free “Small Cremated Remains Kit 2” from the United States Postal Service website. Delivery typically takes 2–5 business days, but sometimes takes longer. Per government regulation, this is the only allowable method for shipping cremated remains within the United States.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1:
Open the vial and insert the funnel.

Step 2:
Carefully open the container holding the cremated remains.

Step 3:
Use the spoon to transfer 3–4 small scoops of cremated remains into the funnel, filling the vial about half full.

Step 4:
Remove the funnel and tightly twist on the vial cap.

Step 5:
Place the vial into the USPS-provided plastic bag. Seal it, and clearly write your name and address on the bag.

Step 6:
Protect the sealed bag using the USPS-provided bubble wrap and tape. Apply the Name and Address Label.

Step 7:
Place the protected vial into the USPS Cremated Remains Box. Seal the box and apply the Prepaid Return Postage Label.
