Honoring Mark’s Journey to the Stars
As part of our Ashes to Space™ mission, we spotlight the lives and legacies of those who orbit with us—our Ashtronauts. Each tribute is submitted by loved ones who share a story, photos, and the spirit of someone worth remembering.
Ashtronaut™ is the designation given to individuals honored through Space Beyond’s Ashes to Space memorial spaceflight service.
Today, we honor: Ashtronaut Mark McElroy Wheeler
📍 From: Melbourne, Florida
🧑🤝🧑 Shared by: Cheryl Wheeler, Wife
These stories remind us why this mission matters—not just for space exploration, but for love, remembrance, and connection.
USAF Veteran, Meteorologist, Hero
Mark was a man of character, discipline, strength and respect. He was our family’s rock, heart and hero. He joined the Air Force (now Space Force) at 18 and served 20 years. This enabled him to enjoy a long career in Meteorology. Upon retirement from the Air Force, he became a meteorologist with a NASA sub-contractor, ENSCO. He was humbled to receive NASA’s Silver Snoopy award, the highest honor awarded to a civilian employee. He cherished the relationships he made throughout his career. His love for his family was deep, always steady and true. His was the very definition of a life well lived! We will ALWAYS love him with all our hearts and souls. Godspeed, Mark. See you on the other side.
🌌 A Journey Beyond Earth
A portion of Mark’s ashes will be launched to space aboard our upcoming mission, where they will orbit Earth as part of a lasting celestial tribute.
Whether stargazing from home or tracking the spacecraft through the app, Mark’s loved ones will be able to follow the journey—knowing that their story is quite literally written in the stars.
